While Alexandrine Parakeets are not as renowned for their talking ability as some other parrot species like African Greys or Amazons, they are still capable of learning to mimic sounds, words, and phrases. However, there is considerable variation among individual birds, and not all Alexandrine Parakeets will talk extensively.
In captivity, Alexandrine Parakeets (Psittacula eupatria) generally have a life expectancy ranging from 20 to 30 years, with proper care. However, individual lifespans can vary based on factors such as genetics, diet, environment, and overall health.
Minimum Dimensions:
The cage dimensions for a single Alexandrine Parakeet should be at least 24 inches (61 cm) in width, 24 inches in depth, and 36 inches (91 cm) in height. However, larger dimensions are always better.
Bar Spacing:
Choose a cage with horizontal bars and a spacing of approximately 3/4 to 1 inch (1.9 to 2.5 cm) to prevent the bird from getting its head or body stuck between the bars.
Horizontal Space:
Alexandrine Parakeets are known for their love of climbing and horizontal movement. A cage with horizontal bars and ample room for lateral movement is beneficial.
Bar Thickness:
Select a cage with sturdy bars to withstand the parakeet’s beak strength. Bar thickness of at least 3 mm is recommended.
Accessories and Perches:
Include various perches of different diameters and textures inside the cage to promote foot health and exercise.
Provide toys and accessories for mental stimulation.
Feeding Area:
Allow for a designated feeding area within the cage where you can place food and water bowls. Ensure easy access to these essentials.
Maintenance:
Choose a cage that is easy to clean. Removable trays and grates simplify the cleaning process.
Additional Play Area:
Consider providing a play gym or play area outside the cage to allow your Alexandrine Parakeet additional space for exercise and social interaction.
High-Quality Pellets:
Choose a reputable brand of high-quality parrot pellets formulated specifically for medium to large parakeets. Pellets serve as a nutritionally balanced base for their diet.
Fresh Fruits:
Offer a variety of fresh fruits, such as apples, pears, bananas, berries, and citrus fruits. Fruits provide essential vitamins and antioxidants.
Fresh Vegetables:
Include a mix of fresh vegetables, such as carrots, broccoli, spinach, kale, bell peppers, and sweet potatoes. Vegetables contribute crucial vitamins and minerals.
Nuts and Seeds:
Provide nuts like almonds, walnuts, and sunflower seeds in moderation. Seeds should be a small part of their diet due to their high-fat content.
Whole Grains and Legumes:
Introduce whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and oats, as well as cooked legumes such as lentils and chickpeas. These foods offer a good source of carbohydrates and protein.
Lean Protein:
Offer sources of lean protein, such as cooked chicken or turkey. Eggs can also be included in moderation.
Calcium and Mineral Supplements:
Ensure that your Alexandrine Parakeet receives adequate calcium. You can provide a calcium supplement or offer a cuttlebone or mineral block.
Avoid Toxic Foods:
Avoid feeding foods that are toxic to birds, including chocolate, caffeine, avocado, alcohol, and foods high in salt and sugar.
Fresh Water:
Provide clean and fresh water at all times.
Variety and Rotation:
Rotate the types of fruits and vegetables regularly to ensure a diverse nutrient intake. This also helps prevent dietary imbalances.
