Green Tree Frog

Green Tree Frog (American Green Tree Frog) – Description and Care

The American Green Tree Frog (Hyla cinerea) is a small, bright green amphibian known for its smooth skin, long limbs, and sticky toe pads. They typically grow to 1.5–2.5 inches and are popular as beginner-friendly pet frogs due to their manageable size and relatively easy care needs. These frogs are nocturnal and more for observing than handling, as frequent handling can stress them out and harm their sensitive skin.

Basic Care Guide:

Enclosure:

  • Size: 10-gallon tank minimum for one frog (larger if housing more).

  • Setup: Vertical space is more important than floor space. Include branches, plants (real or fake), and hides.

  • Substrate: Moist paper towels, coconut fiber, or sphagnum moss.

  • Humidity: 50–70%, mist daily.

  • Temperature: 72–80°F during the day; slight drop at night is okay.

  • Lighting: Not required, but a 12-hour light/dark cycle helps maintain healthy rhythms. UVB optional but beneficial.

Feeding:

  • Diet: Gut-loaded crickets, small roaches, and occasional waxworms.

  • Frequency: 2–3 times per week.

  • Supplements: Dust insects with calcium and multivitamins (calcium every other feeding, vitamins once a week).

Water:

  • Provide a shallow, clean water dish (dechlorinated water only) and change daily.

Handling:

  • Avoid frequent handling. If needed, use clean, damp hands or gloves.

Green Tree Frogs are hardy and charming, especially for those who enjoy watching frogs in naturalistic terrariums. With proper care, they can live up to 6 years or more in captivity.
